SUMMARY:Integrating Financial Health Assessments into Your Organization’s Planning Process
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nThe markers for tracking and assessing a nonprofit organization’s financial health are not a mystery. The key elements of financial health (operating reserves\, funding\, and operational expenses) are generally easy to identify and understand. The biggest challenge is making the commitment to periodically pause and assess which direction the key markers of financial health are trending (up or down). We will discuss how adopting a commitment to pause and make an honest assessment of your organization’s every changing financial picture is an essential best practice. We will also discuss why operating reserves need to be treated as a key strategic financial health priority. Organizations that have accumulated significant operating reserves are in a more sustainable position than organizations that do not have adequate operating reserves. Thus\, operating reserves are an important indicator of longevity and financial health.\n \nLearning Objectives\n\nExplain the key elements of financial health and how they respond to changing conditions and unexpected disruptions. \nDesign and implement procedures to perform a periodic financial health assessment within their organization. \nAnalyze the role of operating reserves in organizational sustainability and use them as a strategic indicator of financial health. \nApply a financial health assessment template\, adapting it to evolving organizational needs and strategic priorities. \n\n  \nTo Watch this Webinar on the Media Library CLICK HERE! \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Building a Contingency Plan for an Unexpected CEO Departure
DESCRIPTION:Course Description:  \nNonprofit organizations face many risks that can damage an organization’s hard-earned reputation\, deplete financial assets\, and generally cause operational mayhem. One often-ignored risk is the possibility of an unexpected departure of the “chief staff” position (CEO\, Executive Director\, etc.). Organizations that have risk mitigation procedures and contingency plans in place will fare better than organizations that are caught off guard. \nIn this presentation we will discuss actions and tactics you can use to lower risk and key success. We will discuss how to develop a set of contingency plans and document related action steps for an unexpected CEO departure through assembling basic risk mitigation procedures and tactical applications and documenting them in a formal written contingency plan. We will also discuss the important complimentary differences between organizational succession planning and CEO transition planning. We will conclude with a discussion on appointing an interim CEO allowing for time to work through a thoughtful 10-step CEO succession and transition plan. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \nIdentify key considerations for effectively responding to an unexpected CEO departure. \nAnalyze potential risks that may arise when the CEO position is vacant and how to mitigate these risks both to operational continuity and the organization’s reputation. \nDescribe the essential components of a contingency plan designed to ensure smooth interim operations and communication during executive leadership transitions. \nDifferentiate between organizational succession planning and CEO transition planning\, and explain how appointing an interim CEO supports a structured\, 10-step succession and transition process. \n  \nTo Watch this Webinar on the Media Library CLICK HERE! \n \n

DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION: \nWhat is so special about nonprofit organization budgets? Like all other types of corporate and business entities\, nonprofits must manage acquisition of funds and use of limited resources\, but with the added heavy responsibility that they exist to support the “public good” while being governed by volunteers. SUMMARY:W459: How to Engage\, Communicate\, and Get More Out of Your Nonprofit Board Members
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION: \nServing on a nonprofit organization’s Board of Directors can be a rewarding and often life-changing experience. Senior management for nonprofit organizations needs to be more active helping their Board members to learn how to be more effective during their Board service term helping Board members find and align their passion and capacity to serve while meeting the needs and expectations of the nonprofit organization they will represent. We will discuss three specific aspects of the Board member lifecycle: \n\nNew Board Member Planning and Preparation\nPathways to Effective Continuing Board Leadership\nPast Presidents and Retiring Board Members Can Be a Powerful Resource or a Missed Opportunity\n\n  \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\n– Learn about how to help new Board members to get off to a faster start and quickly learn how to be more effective during their first year of Board service.\n– How to take a proactive approach to help Board members to find a pathway for continuing their Board leadership roles and find leadership styles that meet their skills and time constraints.\n– We will discuss different tactics for how to optimize and consider continued using and finding interactive opportunities to use retiring Board members especially Past Presidents (Past Board Chairs) in a manner that brings enjoyment to the individual while helping the organization and not getting in the way of the current seated Board of directors.\n\n  \nResources and Source Articles and Two Series from the SE4N Website \n\nNew Board Member Planning and Preparation\n\nServing on a nonprofit organization’s Board of Directors can be a rewarding and often life-changing experience. The first year of Board service will set the stage for the remainder of your time on the Board and directly affect opportunities for engagement\, impact\, visibility\, quality of experience\, and advancement.\nThis 4-part series aims to help new Board members set basic goals and develop realistic expectations for success during this critical early stage of their Board tenure.\n\n\n\n  \n\nPathways to Effective Board Leadership Series \n\nTo be an effective Board member you must consider how your own passion and capacity to serve align with the needs and expectations of the nonprofit organization you will represent.\nThis 4-part series will help you assess and choose the leadership path that is best aligned to the organization as well as yourself\, so that you will be in a position to complete your Board service without regrets or second guesses.\n\n\n\n  \n\nPast Presidents Can Be a Powerful Resource or a Missed Opportunity\n\nI have looked at many lists of Past Presidents for nonprofit organizations and been amazed by the roster of names\, but I am often disappointed at how many Past Presidents have become lost connections. High performing nonprofits keep their Past Presidents engaged and connected with meaningful active roles that are thoughtful and strategic.\nThe position of President or Board Chair is usually short-term however the title of Past President lasts a lifetime. We can learn from the organizations that put a high value on this important resource and have worked to maintain a long-term connection with their Past Presidents. Common themes and tactics used include a strong emphasis on continuing service\, active use of their knowledge\, support and network\, and amplification of their voice as spokespersons and ambassadors.\nContinuing service is a key point of emphasis. Organizations need to develop guidelines for active continuing engagement of Presidents after their terms expire and/or following completion of their term as Immediate Past President. Engagement must be active and regular\, driving home the point that Past Presidents will have a meaningful continuing service role. These roles can be divided into two categories: ceremonial roles and specific functions.\n\n\n\nTo Watch this Webinar on the Media Library CLICK HERE!

SUMMARY:How to Improve the Financial Health of Your Company | Key Steps
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION: \nFinancial health is a key component of sustainability and could be argued the most important factor. Without financial health\, nonprofit organizations will be greatly limited in their efforts to deliver on mission\, procure funding\, and be a sphere of influence. To obtain financial health\, senior leadership (Board\, finance committee\, and senior management) must be well informed of the moving parts that make up financial health and how to monitor changing status and conditions. Financial health is best observed on the balance sheet and keeping a close eye on operating reserves. We will explore how to help senior leadership to better understand and monitor the balance sheet and operating reserves and from an income statement point of view\, we will discuss the hidden benefits of segregation of duties and impact of overhead expenses and allocation of indirect costs and impact on the “bottom-line”. We will finish with a “Quick Takeaways” roundtable discussion covering short and intermediate cash management\, monthly distribution of financial reports\, and the importance of regular communications between development and finance departments and cash management target Policies. \n  \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\n– Learn about how to help senior management to better understand the balance sheet\nand operating reserves and impact on financial health.\n– Explore options and strategies for managing overhead expenses and allocation of\nindirect costs and the hidden benefits from expanded segregation of duties.\n– Learn about the benefits of short and intermediate cash management strategies and\nmonthly distribution of financial reports.\n– Discover how enhancing communications between the finance department and\ndevelopment department is critical to compliance and meeting donor expectations and\npromises.\n\nTo Watch this Webinar on the Media Library CLICK HERE!
