Modern Governance in Action: Strengthening Boards for Today’s Challenges

September 23 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Course Description:

Strong board governance is the foundation of nonprofit and association success—but it must evolve to meet current needs. This webinar will explore key governance practices that support transparency, accountability, and strategic alignment. We’ll examine core topics such as board size, term limits, and the importance of regular Bylaws review, as well as effective board member training and orientation.

In addition, we’ll address emerging issues facing boards today, including the implications of artificial intelligence on governance responsibilities and oversight, and how associations are approaching diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments in a shifting cultural and political landscape. Participants will leave with a practical understanding of how to strengthen board structures while navigating new and complex challenges.

Learning Objectives:

Analyze the impact of board size and term limits on governance effectiveness and decision-making, and identify strategies for optimizing these factors.

Develop a framework for conducting regular Bylaws reviews to align with organizational needs and evolving legal and practical standards.

Understand the importance of board member training, orientation, and the partnership between the board and the executive director in creating a cohesive leadership team.

Evaluate emerging governance considerations related to artificial intelligence and DEI, and formulate strategies for board engagement and oversight in these evolving areas.
