Foundations of Effective Advocacy for Associations

Course Description: 

This session provides association professionals with a practical foundation in public policy advocacy. Presenters will walk through the essential tools in the advocacy toolbox, from direct lobbying and grassroots member mobilization to grasstops engagement, coalition building, and fly-ins, offering actionable strategies for organizations of any size. The session also covers how to navigate Congress and federal agencies effectively, understand compliance and ethics requirements, and engage boards and members to build lasting organizational support for advocacy.

 

Learning Objectives:

Identify the core tools in an advocacy program, including direct lobbying, grassroots and grasstops strategies, coalitions, and fly-ins, and understand when and how to deploy each one effectively.
 
Understand how to navigate the legislative and regulatory landscape, including Congress’s committee structure, the federal rulemaking process, and compliance and ethics requirements for lobbying.
 
Learn practical strategies for mobilizing association members and leaders as effective advocates, from grassroots campaigns and social media engagement to cultivating grasstops relationships with policymakers.
 
Recognize the value of advocacy coalitions for amplifying your organization’s voice and stretching limited resources around shared policy priorities.
